Dutch customs switched to digital validation in January 2026. This means every purchase from a Dutch store must be digitally submitted to customs before departure.
Partner stores
Purchases are automatically registered with Customs by the store.
Passport checks are done in-store.
Once you have a verified account, you no longer need to have your passport checked for each purchase.
Non-partner stores / online purchases
Register your purchases via our app or website before departure.
Make sure your receipts include the following information:
➤ Your full name
➤ Country of residence
➤ Passport number
Once we review and approve your submission, the receipts will be forwarded to Customs.
You can use the NL Customs VAT app to confirm that your purchases were successfully submitted.
⚠️ If you cannot see your registrations, please ensure that the passport number in the NL Customs App and your vatfree.com account match the number in your passport.
🕹️ How to use the NL Customs VAT app for digital validation
Open the NL Customs VAT app on your phone.
Ensure that location services (GPS) and Bluetooth are enabled on your device.
The app detects when you are near the Customs area and uses your location to verify that you are at the correct point to start the validation.
Once location services and Bluetooth are enabled, request VAT validation for your registered purchases in the app.
The app will indicate whether:
The validation is successful immediately, or
You first need to visit the Customs counter with your purchases for an additional check.
Alternatively, you can always visit the Customs desk, and the officer will locate the receipt by scanning your passport.
After validation
Your proof of export is automatically registered in our system.
Your claim will be processed accordingly.
We will keep you updated about your claim status by email and in your account.
Once we receive the store’s payment for your refund, you will be able to request a payout.
